Everyone is fond of high speed wireless internet connections with no cumbersome wires and cords and especially one that can be taken anywhere any time. But if you find yourself stuck with wired broadband that you currently use, follow the simple steps below to replace it with a better speed and higher mobility wireless internet:

Following is a small list of things you should have before you get started:

1- Wireless Router

2- Ethernet Cable

3- Wireless Internet Card

4- Wireless Router Installation Disk

Following are the steps to replace your modem with a wireless internet connection:

SET UP YOUR ROUTERS:

1- Unplug your DSL modem from its power supply.

2- Connect your Wireless Router to your internet modem or DSL using the Ethernet Cable.

3- Plug in your wireless router and your cable or DSL modem’s power supply.

4- Now plug your Ethernet Cable into your internet router and plug the other end into your wireless router.

5- Wait for five minutes until you’re sure the “online” lights are turned on and are stable.

SET UP YOUR COMPUTER:

1- Plug your wireless Internet card into one of your PC or laptop’s expansion slots.

2- Run the installation disk that comes with your wireless router and/or wireless card. This will install any needed drivers and configure your PC or laptop for a wireless connection.

3- Reboot your computer.

CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER TO THE INTERNET

1- You should see a wireless Internet icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen; right-click on it.

2- Select “View Available Wireless Networks” and select your network from the available list.

3- Click “Connect” and follow the instructions to set up an encryption key. Your computer now has a wireless Internet connection.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

1- Make sure you run your installation disk prior to attempting to connect your computer to your wireless network.

2- To increase compatibility, purchase your wireless Internet modem and card from the same manufacturer.

3- Make sure you power on your DSL or cable modem and have an established connection to the Internet before connecting your wireless router. Your cable modem or DSL connection must first be receiving a signal from your Internet service provider before it can transmit to your router.

Ever found yourself thinking why should you be using a wireless internet connection? Evidently, the heavy proliferation of wireless internet has seen new height especially since the launch of Smartphones. Prior to their launch, everyone was well used to using wired internet connections; moreover dial-up internet was mostly common in the masses.

With Smartphone sales peaking over a 100 mil lion, the need of wireless technology has only seen a rise. But that’s not it. With the invention of laptops, tablets, SMART television and many other wireless enabled devices, the use of wireless internet is becoming a normalcy.

Keeping it short, some basic reasons for you to use or shift to wireless internet connections (if you haven’t still) are mentioned below, however to choose between Wi-Fi or WiMax is totally your choice,

High Speed

A few years back, speed was not a significant feature since ‘owning’ an internet connection was far more important. But since technology has evolved and times have changed, the importance of high speed internet has become a necessity. As a matter of fact, the most new in line; wireless internet tops internet connections. It is so fast that it’s even challenging most wired internet services. You can witness it by going down the timeline; EDGE was relatively slow, then 3G was decent and now 4G is blazing fast! Hence, to keep up with the fast pace advancements and need to be connected on-line wherever you are, there is no better solution than having a wireless internet.

It’s Everywhere – Almost!

The greatest advantage of wireless internet is the fact that it is not tied or limited to any cables. Hence, it can be accessed from any point to the other without the help of any wired cables. All you need is a wireless enabled device. In many countries, wireless towers have been setup to make internet available for all citizens living in a specific area. This is a sign of having wireless internet almost everywhere you go, keeping you connected to the e-world on the go! Although there is no guarantee of having the perfect speed of broadband internet, but some sort of availability of internet will become easily possible; giving you another reason to go for wireless internet!

Upgrading is easier!

When you’re using wired cable internet or DSL and feel the need to upgrade your connection, you’d probably have to go an extra mile and change the entire setup along with the wiring and other linked devices. But with wireless internet, no change of lines or wires is needed since the whole connection is established in the cloud. All that needs to be done is to connect the wireless towers with new equipment or to switch your wireless routers/devices without going through the hassle of switching a whole system.

Compatible with all virtual devices

Wireless is compatible with all devices, even with those with hom you might have not thought it would be. Apart from all the Smartphones, tablets, laptops and netbooks, your desktop as well as home server are equally compatible to wireless internet. How so?

Continue using your WLAN/LAN home network. All you have to do is replace the wired cable or DSL modem with a wireless router. By doing so, your very home server can be turned into a wireless compatible system which can send and receive all signals to establish a wireless internet connection!

And top it all, there are always easier solutions for wireless internet problems. Increasing your broadband internet speed, securing your wireless internet connection or connecting various devices to a single wireless network, troubleshooting is child’s play for wireless internet users!

As of 2011, Wi-Max is the comparatively newer internet technology which runs on 4G and functions on a higher bandwidth than its competition; Wi-Fi. 4G technology, in layman’s terms works on sending and receiving towers from one point to the other. This transmission of signals establishes an internet connection that is boosted with the help of various supporting devices. But the wireless internet connection can turn faulty if the reception of signals is not clear because for Wi-Max, the greater the clarity of the wireless signals, the greater the speed.

After going through a number of trial and error experiments, it’s still uncertain of how can one boost a Wi-Max signal adequately enough to establish a strong wireless internet connection. However, find below a few tips to boost your WiMax signals,

MODEM PLACEMENT

Place the WiMax modem close to the window. Enclosed places become a hurdle for signal reception to the modem and may weaken the wireless internet connection. The wireless modem should at least show two lights for a moderate signal and three for a stronger one.

DISABLE SECURITY SOFTWARE

Firewalls and anti-virus programs scan each incoming and outgoing signals. Since WiMax is largely dependent on the clarity of wireless signals, such intervention stalls the wireless internet connection. To avoid such a situation, disable your computers security software. Once it is disabled, connect to the Internet using the WiMAX modem and reactivate the security software. It is not favorable to browse the internet without enabling your firewall settings since your computer is vulnerable to spyware and viruses which may in return cause further damage to your system.

KEEP ELECTRONICS AWAY

Keep other electronic devices at least 3 feet away from the WiMax Wireless router. Microwaves, televisions and other routers may cause a reduction in your modems signal potential since all electronics devices emit and receive signals. This might cause an interference in your WiMax signals.

TURN MODEM CLOCKWISE

Turn the modem clockwise to adjust the modem’s antenna, and wait 15 seconds to 20 seconds while the modem attempts to detect a stronger signal.

USE EHTERNET CABLE

Use Ethernet cable to connect your WiMax wireless modem to your computer to establish a direct connection between the router and your system!

For those who left us last year - Choose Life for Who You Can!

We cannot imagine the suffering and pain of 40,000 women who eventually succumb to breast cancer every year inPakistan. Their pain ripples across families through generations.

There is one thing though that is even more dangerous than breast cancer – and that is indifference! Lack of awareness and negligence is the crux of the problem. As a result,Pakistan has the highest number of deaths from breast cancer among all countries of the world!

This is despite the glaring fact that with early diagnosis a patient’s chances of survival are more than 90%. Pink Ribbon Pakistan, an emblem of hope has been addressing breast cancer issues since 2003. With its nationwide breast cancer awareness campaign, its aim is to make this cruel disease a premier health concern. Pink Ribbon Pakistanis dedicated to fight breast cancer at every stage.

Current challenges and how we dare to overcome them

Last year we have been able to directly reach out to

10,00,000 women to empower them with knowledge and techniques to detect breast cancer at early stage

Provided free clinical examination to 25,000 women through expert doctors

Provided Free Mammogram Screening to over 3,500 women

One of the great challenges Pink Ribbon faces is getting people to talk about the disease and be more open about it. In Pakistan, especially women, avoid discussing about the issue even when they feel they need to. Because of this indifference, the condition usually gets worse and when breast cancer is finally detected, it is usually too late. Illiteracy and lack of proper infrastructure is huge hindrance in spreading awareness about breast cancer. The myths and misconceptions prevalent in the society also add to the growing number of breast cancer cases. To counter this problem, Pink Ribbon is running a massive awareness program for women with the aim to spread the word to every nook and corner. Considering the recent trend of breast cancer on a rise amongst young girls, Pink Ribbon has a youth program with colleges and youth volunteers. This way Pink Ribbon hopes to prevent the disease among those at risk.

Prevention is better than cure especially for breast cancer. On 31st March 2009, Pink Ribbon took the initiative of providing free mobile mammography service to women in urban and rural areas ofPakistan. The Mammography Bus, mobile service is Pink Ribbon’s contribution for the women of Pakistan and suburb areas. It is sensitizing them about early detection as well as empowering them to defeat this silent killer before it can endanger their precious lives. Pink Ribbon has extended its outreach in over 52 districts acrossPakistan in all 4 provinces and Azad Kashmir.

Pink Ribbon Month

October is celebrated as the international month of Breast Cancer awareness worldwide. This year tooPakistan’s premium awareness campaign, Pink Ribbon is doing what is needed at various levels, by raising public awareness about the disease, highlighting the role of research into the causes of breast cancer and promoting the significance of early detection of breast cancer in terms of better treatment and survival. Such activities are carried out all year round but the month of October is special.

We need ever more support to extend our message across the nation ensuring that none of us will have to bear the horror of losing a mother, a sister, a wife, or a daughter.

About Breast Cancer

According to an estimate of the World Health Organization, over 1.2 million people will be diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide. Breast cancer is one of the oldest types of cancers and also the most common form among females. Breast cancer’s basic definition is ‘an uncontrollable growth of breast cells’. When cells divide and multiply rapidly, they form a lump, called tumor. Nearly 80% of findings on mammogram are not cancers. They are usually benign tumors, a cyst, or some other non-cancerous condition. A tumor is defined as cancer only when it can invade nearby tissues and organs and damage them. Then it is called malignant.

Breast cancer is an important health issue, which is of growing concern, for an increasing number of women in Pakistan, though it also affects men albeit in very small numbers. Raising public awareness about breast cancer is of singular importance as it is the necessary first step that will go a long way towards alleviating the burden of this disease among Pakistani women. The purpose here is to put some facts to light, removing some misconceptions and suggest some options for the future with reference to breast cancer care in Pakistan.

The burden of new cases of breast cancer from Pakistan has been reported to be the highest amongst all Asian countries with one out of every ninth women in the country at a high risk. As compared Pakistan, neighboring India has a rate of one in twenty two women at a high risk of breast cancer. These findings, from a cancer registry established in Karachi, in the absence of a National Cancer Registry (Pink Ribbon has now convinced the government to set up a trial cancer registry), may not reflect the situation in all of Pakistan; however, the fact remains that breast cancer represents about a third of the overall cancer burden among women in Pakistan.

The reasons for such a high burden of breast cancer in Pakistan are mainly ignorance, illiteracy, eating habits and a state of obliviousness. In the public health context of a resource-constrained setting such as Pakistan, in order to achieve a reduction in the disease burden, it is important to identify risk factors that have the maximum potential in terms of primary prevention of breast cancer.

Some preliminary studies have identified:

* family history of breast cancer,
* late age at menarche,
* consanguineous (within the family) marriages,
* body mass index that is equal to or greater than 30 (women who are overweight or obese),
* higher parity (number of times a female gives birth),
* late age of a woman at the time of first birth and a positive history of abortion, as being associated with breast cancer in Pakistan.

Yearly clinical examination from your doctor and mammography every two years after the age of 40 is suggested. But monthly breast self-exams is something recommended by all doctors from the age of 16 onwards. The breast self-exam is a way that a woman can check her breasts for changes (such as lumps or thickenings). It includes looking at and feeling the breast. Any unusual changes are to be reported to the doctor. When breast cancer is detected in its early stages, the chances for surviving the disease are greatly improved.

Breast Cancer is greatly influenced by the lifestyle of the woman. A healthy lifestyle insures minimum risk of getting Breast Cancer. Among the easiest things to control are what you eat and drink and how active you are. Maintain a healthy weight is a great precaution for women. There’s a clear link between obesity and breast cancer. This is especially true if you gain the weight later in life, particularly after menopause. Stay physically active; regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and, as a consequence, may aid in breast cancer prevention. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. By reducing the amount of fat in your diet, you may decrease your risk of other diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke. And a low-fat diet may protect against breast cancer in another way if it helps you maintain a healthy weight — another factor in breast cancer risk. For a protective benefit, limit fat intake to less than 35 percent of your daily calories and restrict foods high in saturated fat.

Instead of asking you to go through numerous currency converting websites, Google displays the answer to your query on its homepage right away. All you need to do is type your search in the search bar such as in the picture above, mentioning ‘how much to convert’ and ‘from which currency to the other’ and there you’ll have Google display the most accurate results on the same page!

Calculator:

Google is also ready to do the maths for you! Instead of making you go back to your traditional scientific calculator, you can simply enter your mathematical problem in the search box and hit Enter! In a matter of a couple of seconds, you’ll have your solution pop up on the screen!

Unit Conversion:

Google also makes it easier for you to convert different metrics into the other. From degrees to Fahrenheit or centimetres to kilometres, Google is ready to do all the conversions for you! All you have to do is type in your search in the Google Search Bar and hit enter to get instant results of your conversions. In addition, Google can also do basic mathematics within conversions to provide you with the most accurate results.

Find Your IP:

If you ever wonder which part of the world is your computer linked to or where are you located in the cyber world, you’ll find the need to know your IP address. IP means the Internet Protocol through which information is sent between two computers via the internet. All you need to do to find your IP address is type “My IP” in the Google Search bar and the search engine will tell you what your exact IP is.

Weather:

Google can give you the weather forecast for any city in the world up to a week. The results are shown within seconds after you search for the weather update of your city like in the image above. This avoids the hassle of searching for a weather forecast website because the result is shown at the top of the Google Search Result page!

Sunrise:

If you have to find out the sunrise and sunset timings of your city, you can search for it on Google and it will show you the exact time the next sunrise or sunset will take place. It also tells you the number of hours left until the sunrise/sunset along with the exact time and date!

Time:

You must have relatives or friends living abroad and you may have often found yourself thinking what time is it in their country for you to reach them or talk to them. When you type the city name along with the time query, it will immediately show the results of the exact time at that place!

Dictionary:

You can also use Google Search as a dictionary! Simply type in the word you’re searching the meaning for and find the answers right away on the very same page within split seconds!

In these ways, Google makes browsing much easier and time efficient for its users!

When opting to acquire or upgrading your wireless internet connection, it becomes difficult to decide on what you should go for that meets your requirements. Find answers to some common queries that we have received over time regarding broadband Internet, file sharing, cheap internet packages, Internet security etc.

Q) My son is fond of gaming to the extent of playing games all day long for hours and hours with no breaks. But the problem is he gets really upset if the internet speed slows or drops frequently. Can you provide information regarding what sort of internet connection should I get for him and which package specifically?

Gaming for your son can definitely turn into a difficult task especially if he son is an avid gamer and is involved multi-player gaming, which requires him to stay at par while competing with players from around the world. We would suggest you to get a WiMax Broadband Internet connection. WiMax is a faster and much more extensive version of a WiFi connection. It also has a large hosting capacity that results in faster speeds and a greater reach. This serves to be the solution to the oft-criticized, meager WiFi range.

Q) Sometimes I feel like my wireless internet connection is being used by someone else. This is because the internet speed disrupts despite of no problems from either ends. How can I prevent this from happening?

Often there are no technical issues with the internet connection but some disturbance and discontinuity is experienced by the users. Some broken, old or rusty cables can be a possibility. Remove any unwanted programs from your system that have not been in use for a long time. Upgrade your system and firmware settings. There are countless effective ways to prevent your wireless internet connection from dropping frequently. If you fear that your connection is being misused, contact Customer Care and they might be able to figure that out for you.

Q) We have a home entertainment set up which means that our television, laptops and mobile devices all run on the internet. I am looking for a high speed internet connection which can easily empower our entire home internet setup. Any suggestions?

Well, Wateen Telcom aims to provide a digitally enabled lifestyle. And for you, we would advise Wateen WiMax Wireless Internet Connection. Along with the various functions of WiMax, it can sustain a much higher bandwidth and thus, is the best choice if you have multiple devices connected to one internet connection. If you compare Wi-Fi and WiMax, you will know that WiMax is a much extensive version of Wi-Fi, in layman’s terms, and can ensure faster speeds and greater reach.

Q) Do you think a wired connection is suitable for a house with multiple internet systems or a wireless one?

If you have more than one wireless devices connected to a single router, it is advisable to use a wireless internet connection since wired broadband can only be used on a single system until and unless it is not connected to a wireless router. With a wireless internet connection, you can connect your television, multiple laptops, SMART phones and various other internet enabled devices to the wireless connection.

Q) I frequently travel in different cities of Pakistan and hence I’m looking for a portable wireless internet connection through which I can connect to the internet from any part of Pakistan. Please suggest.

It is often a matter of concern for frequent travellers to be enabled with a speedy internet connection on the go. Hence, Wateen has several USB packages such as the Bolt, Bolt 2 and Thunderbolt device that keeps its users connected to the internet anywhere they go in Pakistan. Before you’re leaving for your next trip, make sure to check if internet services are available in your area. Stay connected wherever you are!

Q) I have a very minimal use of Internet at home and at the most all I do is social networking and check emails. And I believe that the current package I have is far too much for me. Can you suggest which cheap yet nice package should I go for? I don’t need any infinite downloads or any heavy transferring of files. Thank you.

If your online activities do not include extensive use of the internet in terms of uploads, downloads, file transfer or gaming, it is a wise choice to use a suitable package that fills your needs adequately. We recommend you to use the Starters Package that allows you to surf the web endlessly and additionally also allows you to download within a specific time period, if need be. Also, you can use the Package Calculator to help you choose the best package for yourself!

Q) Uploading and downloading files on the internet to share with people in my network or at home is very time consuming. Isn’t there an easier way for me to share files speedily? I really need help with this.

There are numerous ways of file sharing present in the modern days especially with the boom of on-line file sharing. However, there is no guarantee of one specific file sharing technique that works for all. It depends on everyone’s experiences with various platforms. Nonetheless, websites such as wetransfer.com, transferbigfiles.com and 4shared.com are infamous for their speedy file transfers via a download link. But if you have setup a home network, the most efficient way to transfer files is to copy them from your folder to the shared folder on the home network. Hope this helps!

Broadband Internet has seen tremendous growth in Pakistan since its launch till date. From having only one internet service provider in the whole country to achieving the milestone of being the first to launch WiMax throughout Pakistan, there seems to be no looking back on internet developments.
With over one million people connected through mere wireless internet connections only in Pakistan, there grew a dire need of authentic and speedy file sharing mediums. Despite the fact that the risks involved in sharing files online especially through unencrypted wireless networks are huge, some prominent services emerged on the forefront that changed the world.

HISTORY OF ONLINE FILE SHARING

Launch and the Early Days

Launched in 1997 by five UCLA graduates, The Scour Inc search engine is considered to be one of the earliest online file sharing services. However, it couldn’t survive for a longer time and AudioGalaxy, another file sharing service, took its place and garnered much more popularity than The Scour Inc.

It was in 1999 that file sharing became mainstream with ‘Napster’ launched by Shawn Fanning. It was a free program that allowed direct peer-to-peer downloading, enabling users to easily search others computers for MP3’s. The free service emerged to be most popular amongst college students and in university campuses where broadband internet was easily accessible. The success of Napster led to the release of dozens of similar programs such as Gnutella, eDonkey2000 and Kazaa.

These services became targets of litigation as the music industry claimed the services allowed users to illegally host copyright material. And therefore, didn’t sustain for a longer time period.

BitTorrent

The drastic change in the file sharing landscape was witnessed after the development of ‘BitTorrent’. This file sharing platform unlike the ones before, work independently off of users’ computers, eliminating the need for any service aside from tracker websites that link to available torrents. BitTorrent is now one of the leading file sharing services on the web with an average of over 2 million people who use the service every day.

The advancements in the e-world are persistent and during their course of progression, hundreds and thousands of new softwares and services are tried and tested. With sites like RapidShare and MediaFire, one-click hosting popularized in the masses in the year 2006. Such websites allowed users to upload/host files to their servers and share the download link with anyone in the worldwide for free.

Social Sharing

Moving forward, it was the proliferation of the social networks and social sharing that the world of file sharing met a paradigm shift. This is where everything and anything under the sun is easily shared with hundreds and thousands of people with a single click.

Online Web Hosting

The advancements in the e-world are persistent and during their course of progression, hundreds and thousands of new softwares and services are tried and tested. With sites like 4shared, RapidShare and MediaFire, one-click hosting popularized in the masses in the year 2006. Such websites allowed users to upload/host files to their servers and share the download link with anyone in the worldwide for free.

Websites such as wetransfer.com and transferbigfiles.com have also popularized in the masses since they allow users to send up to 2GB of files for FREE. This means that innumerable pictures, songs, documents and compressed movie files can be shared with anyone in the world with a free download link. Such advancements in Internet technology have rendered the world into a global village connected by competent and speedy on-the-go wireless internet connections.

Sharing files on a single wireless network

A little traditional yet an efficient method for unlimited file sharing is by connecting 2 or more computers through a single wireless network. The only drawback is that all computers need to be in the same Wi-Fi range to access the shared files. Nonetheless, this is best way to share files within different computers in offices and homes.

All you need is to create a “home group”, “connect all computers to the homegroup” and “access shared folder by all”. Below are the steps to follow,

Access the Control Panel from the Start menu.

Make sure the options are displayed according to category on the top right of the screen.

Find the “Network and Internet” category. Click the link for “Choose homegroup and sharing options”.

This is where you either create a homegroup to share files between computers or access an existing homegroup to use on other machines.

If “There is currently no homegroup on the network”: Click the link at the bottom of the screen that says ” Create a Homegroup:”

If “This computer belongs to a homegroup”: Click the link to “View or print the homegroup password”.

At this point, you will be able to decide what types of files you want to share between two computers. The options are pictures, documents, music, printers, and videos, and you can choose to share any combination of those file types.

Make sure to add a security password to your shared folder to ensure safety of all the data you are sharing. Now all that is left to do before sharing files between computers is to access that homegroup from other machines. To do this, turn on the other machine, click on the start menu, and access the control panel just like before. Find the link to “Choose homegroup and sharing options” under the “Network and Internet” category.

Instead of creating a new homegroup, however, you will see an alert box that tells you a homegroup has been detected on your network. Click the “Join Now” button. Enter the password you saved from the other computer and select the file types just like before. Wait a moment while the connection is established, after which you are ready to share files through a wireless network!

TIP

To avoid the number of clicks, create a “Shortcut” of the shared folder on your Desktop. By doing this, you can access the shared files, view or transfer them with a single click without the hassle of browsing through multiple folders.

The launch of SMART TV is the new buzzword in home entertainment. It was no sooner after the launch of SMART phones that SMART TV established its’ market in the world of entertainment technology; bringing it to a completely new level with the connection of high-speed broadband internet.

Home wireless networks are popular for connecting computers and laptops to the internet. But since the invention of SMART technology, they can also be used to connect HD, LED and LCD televisions to the internet.

If you wish to connect your WiMax wireless network to SMART TV, make sure you have all the prerequisites mentioned below,

Ethernet Cable

WiMax Connection

WiMax Wireless Router

USB Adapter (compatible with your TV)

And of course, a Wireless Capable TV.

Once you’re set, follow the steps below to connect WiMax to TV:

Using the Ethernet cable, connect the wireless router to the Ethernet wall jack. This will establish the wireless signals required for your home network.

Insert a wireless LAN cable or plug the wireless USB adapter into the TV’s USB port. The USB adapter will act as a receiver of the wireless signals sent by the router.

Now turn the TV on. Select ‘Menu’ on the remote control and then click on ‘Setup’

In the Setup menu, click ‘Network’. From the Network menu, change the default network type to ‘Wireless‘.

Select ‘Network Setting’ then click on ‘Select a Network’. Now let your TV detect all and any wireless networks in range. Once your network name appears, select it from all the networks available.

Once you have selected your wireless network, insert your Wi-Fi password. (here is how to setup your password on Wateen ZTE device, BOLT 2 device or Blade Wi-Fi device)

Give your TV a few minutes till it establishes a solid connection with your WiMax wireless internet connection.

Select ‘Return’ to go back to the ‘Network’ menu. Select ‘Test Network’ to ensure if you have successfully connected your WiMax to TV.

Now stream videos, watch movies online, surf the internet and also play games by connecting WiMax to your gaming console!

TIPS:

After testing the network, if TV does not detect the wireless network, ensure that the Ethernet cable is properly connected.

Even then if the network is not detected, unplug the router and TV for 30 seconds and re-plug them. Check ‘Test Network’ to assure the wireless network is connected.

Instructions given here are generic and work for all devices. However, give a consult your TV manual to follow any specific directions.

A slight difference is found between the two fastest growing internet connections i.e WiFi and WiMax. A WiMAX connection, in layman’s terms, is a faster, more extensive version of a WiFi connection. With faster speeds, greater reach and larger hosting capacity, it is seen as the solution to the oft-criticized, meager WiFi range.

This savior of the internet-using populace basically consists of two parts, a WiMax tower and a WiMax receiver. While the former, an offshoot of the phone tower concept, provides the coverage connections for an area of 3,000 square miles, the latter comes in the form of a PCMCIA card or a small receiver and antenna box.

A wired connection, high-bandwidth, of course, is a possible way to establish an Internet connection from a tower station, while a line-of-sight, microwave-based connection is the other option. This connection is the main driving force behind the ability of a WiMax connection to cater to a large area.

The non-line-of-sight service uses an antenna, installed in the computer, to establish a connection with the tower. With a frequency range of 2GHz to 11 GHz, this is the lower frequency range option but is better when it comes to protection against physical obstructions.

Similarly, the line-of-sight service uses a dish antenna, fixed and pointing straight at the WiMax tower. As is it is much more direct in nature, the connection is stronger and frequencies high, around 66 GHz, allowing for greater bandwidth and, consequently, data transmission in large amounts. The WiMax transmitting station in a line-of-sight service sends data to WiMax enabled routers or computers within a 30-mile radius, allowing for maximum range.

The last quality ascertaining factor when it comes to WiMax quality is the global area network (GAN). This, essentially, works much like a cell-phone network, with coverage in all areas of the country. Moreover, it also harbors the ability to offer cable modem service type Internet access, while also being available for portable devices such as laptops and cell-phones.
